Do you offer backups?

Absolutely! We know how important your data is so we work with you to make sure all critical data is backed up to your requirements. Whether that means on-site duplication, off-site duplication, daily, weekly, monthly. We’ll make sure you’re covered!

Which Linux Distributions do you offer?

We stick to the distributions that we’ve found to be the most stable and secure, and that we have the most experience with. This means, for our managed hosting services, we only use:

  • Debian (stable)
  • CentOS 5.x
  • Ubuntu 8.04 (LTS)
  • openSUSE 11.x

When you decide to use our managed hosting solutions we’ll talk with you about any preferences you have. If you don’t have a preference, chances are we’ll use Debian for its robustness, very stable nature and exhaustive list of supported packages.

Can I customize a Managed Hosting Plan?

Absolutely! We provide base hardware which can be upgraded at any time. We also understand that every business is different and needs are different. We’ll allow you to mix and match features according to your needs. Keep in mind that adding too many features will surely increase the hardware requirements and you may need to bump up a plan level.

Can I upgrade as my business grows?

Yes. You can upgrade from one plan to another by submitting a support ticket. All your data, configuration profiles, and IP addresses move with you to the upgraded server.

Without upgrading plans, you can still add “Extras” to your account. Extras are added instantly (some require reboots). Removing resources pro-rates the balance of the month back to your account so you only pay for the time you’ve used them.

I really have no idea what I need. Can you help?

Of course we can help! Before we configure anything for you we’ll meet with you and find out as much as we can about your current business need. We’ll decide together what your needs are and put together a plan that you’re comfortable with. We’ll apply our expertise in our market to what you can tell us about yours!

Do you host DNS?

We have three geographically diverse DNS servers which provide name service for ourselves and our clients. If you’d like us to provide your DNS server we’d be more than happy to. Note: each major plan provides a basic level of DNS as required. For dedicated DNS (internal and external views), please consider our Managed DNS Service.

Can you provide console access?

Currently the only one of our plans that provides console access is the Managed Build Server plan. For everything else we’d prefer you let us do what we do best, and let us completely manage your services. We can discuss exemptions on a case by case basis.

What if I go over my monthly data transfer limit?

Transfer quotas are soft caps. If you go over by a few GB we usually won’t charge you. We’ll send an e-mail when you reach 80% of your monthly quota. Together we can forecast whether or not you will have consistent overage, in which case you can purchase additional transfer or upgrade to the next plan level. Additional transfer is currently $0.20/GB.

What can I do with multiple servers?

Redundancy or load balancing. Distinct production and development environments. Linodes are automatically deployed on separate servers if available. If located within the same facility, you can take advantage of our private, back-end network, which does not count towards your monthly bandwidth quota.

Can I purchase additional IPs?

Yes. All new accounts include one IP and are permitted to add an additional IP via the Linode Manager for $1.00 per month. If you need more than two IPs, you can open a support ticket and provide proper justification (we abide by ARIN’s regulations).

How am I billed?

We currently offer monthly, annual, and 24-month billing cycles. If you are interested in pre-paying, open a support ticket and we can accommodate you. When you sign up, your first invoice is pro-rated until the end of the month. After that, your subscription is automatically renewed on the first of each month (for annual accounts, on the anniversary of your first full month).
